Everyone knows King Street. Everyone knows Rainbow Row. Everyone knows the Battery. But the neighborhood where our homes actually live — where our guests wake up every morning and walk out the door into real Charleston — is one that most visitors never think to look up before they arrive.

Welcome to Cannonborough-Elliotborough.

This is where we’re based. This is where our homes are. And after years of watching guests discover it for the first time, we can tell you with confidence: it’s the best place to stay in Charleston.

What Makes Cannonborough-Elliotborough Different

Charleston’s most famous streets are extraordinary. But they’re also busy, touristy, and designed to be seen rather than lived in. Cannonborough-Elliotborough is different because it’s a real neighborhood — one where locals actually live, where the coffee shop knows your order, where the streets are quieter but King Street is still a three-minute walk away.

It sits on the Charleston peninsula just north of Broad Street, bordered roughly by Rutledge Avenue to the west and Meeting Street to the east. The architecture is quintessentially Charleston — double-piazza homes, brightly painted cottages, wrought iron gates, and live oaks that drape the sidewalks in shade. But unlike the more formal South of Broad neighborhood, Cannonborough-Elliotborough has an energy that’s genuinely lived-in and welcoming.

This is a neighborhood that rewards slow walking. Bring comfortable shoes and no particular agenda.

The Streets Worth Knowing

Spring Street is the neighborhood’s main artery and where you’ll find our offices, local cafés, independent boutiques, and some of Charleston’s most beloved neighborhood restaurants. It hums with energy in the morning and settles into something slower and more beautiful by late afternoon. Walking these streets at golden hour is one of those Charleston experiences that genuinely stops you in your tracks.

Getting Around from Cannonborough-Elliotborough

One of the greatest things about staying in this neighborhood is how effortlessly walkable everything is.

King Street is about a 1 to 5 minute walk depending on which end you’re heading to — close enough that you’ll wander over without thinking about it, far enough that the neighborhood itself feels like a retreat from the bustle.

The City Market and French Quarter are a ten to twenty minute walk through some of Charleston’s most beautiful blocks. It’s the kind of walk that becomes the highlight of a morning.

The Battery and Waterfront Park are a fifteen to twenty minute walk south, following some of the most gorgeous residential streets in America.

For beaches, ride-share services are your best option. Sullivan’s Island and Isle of Palms are about twenty minutes by car. Our concierge team can arrange a full beach setup waiting for you when you arrive.

Why Our Guests Love Coming Back to the Neighborhood

We’ve hosted thousands of groups in this neighborhood and the pattern is always the same. Guests arrive focused on the tourist highlights. By the second morning, they’ve discovered the neighborhood coffee shop, they’ve walked around Colonial Lake, they’ve found the garden hidden behind an iron gate they almost walked past. By checkout, Cannonborough-Elliotborough is their favorite part of the trip.

That’s the magic of staying in a real neighborhood rather than a tourist corridor. Charleston shows you a different side of itself. A slower, warmer, more genuinely Southern side.

Our homes are designed to fit into this neighborhood seamlessly — historic architecture, wraparound piazzas, courtyards that open onto quiet streets. When you stay with Respite & Revelry, you’re not visiting Cannonborough-Elliotborough. You’re living in it, at least for a few days.
