Inside Guesthouse Charleston: A Closer Look at Our Historic Downtown Collection

Guesthouse Charleston is where Respite & Revelry began. A collection of thoughtfully restored historic homes in the heart of downtown, designed from the beginning for groups who want to be in the middle of everything — together.

There’s a collection of homes in the heart of historic downtown Charleston that has been quietly hosting remarkable groups for nearly a decade. Bachelorette parties that turned into annual traditions. Families who came for a reunion and left already planning the next one. Wedding parties who discovered that staying together under one roof — or a few roofs, sharing a courtyard — changed the entire shape of the weekend.

That collection is Guesthouse Charleston. And it’s where Respite & Revelry began.

The Origin of Guesthouse Charleston

Guesthouse Charleston started with a simple conviction: that the best way to experience a city like Charleston is from the inside of a home rather than a hotel room. That groups who stay together — who share mornings over coffee and evenings on the piazza — have fundamentally better trips than groups spread across separate hotel floors.

The original Guesthouse properties were carefully selected historic homes in the Cannonborough-Elliotborough neighborhood of downtown Charleston — steps from King Street, tucked into one of the city’s most charming and walkable residential areas. Over time, the collection grew. The properties were restored and refined. The guest experience was elevated with concierge services, Porch Portraits sessions, and the kind of thoughtful touches that turn a stay into a memory.

Today, Guesthouse Charleston is part of The Respite & Revelry Co. family — alongside The Manor on Spring Street and St. Philip Plaza — and remains the heart of what we do.

What Makes the Guesthouse Collection Different

The most distinctive feature of Guesthouse Charleston is the courtyard collection model. Many of our properties are grouped around shared gardens and courtyards — multiple historic homes surrounding a common outdoor space that becomes the natural gathering point for the group.

This configuration solves a problem that large groups often face: the tension between togetherness and privacy. With the courtyard model, your wedding party can be in three different homes, each with its own bedrooms and bathrooms and living space, but within fifty feet of each other around a shared garden. You gather when you want to gather. You retreat when you need to. The weekend has a natural rhythm that feels easy rather than forced.

It’s a setup that’s genuinely rare in Charleston vacation rentals, and guests who’ve experienced it consistently say it was their favorite part of the stay.

The Properties: What to Expect

Each home in the Guesthouse collection has its own character — the architecture varies, the interiors are individually designed, the garden configurations differ. But there are things you can count on across the collection.

Historic architecture, thoughtfully restored. Every Guesthouse property sits in a building with genuine history. Heart pine floors, transom windows, high ceilings, and the architectural details that make Charleston homes so extraordinary. Alongside those original features, everything beneath the surface has been updated — HVAC, plumbing, electrical, kitchens, bathrooms — so the comfort is completely modern even when the bones are 19th century.

Wraparound piazzas or courtyard access. Every property in the collection has meaningful outdoor living space. This is non-negotiable for us.

Fully equipped kitchens. Our kitchens come stocked with cookware, pantry basics, and coffee so your group can actually cook if you want to. For groups that want a stocked refrigerator on arrival, our concierge team can arrange grocery pre-stocking before you check in.

Professional cleaning and inspection before every stay.

A locally based team. Our team is in Charleston. Not in a call center. When something comes up, you’re reaching a real person who knows the city, knows the properties, and can actually help.

Who Stays at Guesthouse Charleston

Wedding groups and wedding parties are our most frequent guests. The courtyard collections make Guesthouse Charleston uniquely ideal for bringing a wedding party together while giving everyone their own space. We regularly host the bride’s family in one home, the groom’s family in another, and the wedding party in a third — all sharing a courtyard, all within easy walking distance of Charleston’s most celebrated wedding venues.

Bachelorette weekends are another core part of what we do. Our homes are designed for the getting-ready moments, the late evenings, and the slow mornings — and our concierge team can arrange everything from in-home spa services and mixology classes to Porch Portraits sessions and custom welcome packages.

Family reunions and multigenerational trips are increasingly common. Multiple homes around a shared courtyard give extended families the space to be together without being on top of each other — something hotel room blocks simply cannot replicate.

Guesthouse Charleston and the Broader R&R Collection

Guesthouse Charleston is one of three collections within The Respite & Revelry Co. For guests who need more scale or a different character, The Manor on Spring Street offers a grand estate experience ideal for larger groups. St. Philip Plaza provides a boutique, intimate option in the heart of the French Quarter.

Our team can help you navigate the full collection and recommend the right configuration for your group — whether that’s a single Guesthouse property, multiple homes in the courtyard cluster, or a combination across our collections.
